On November 18th I got a phone call from daycare. Every working parent dreads seeing the daycare number come up on the phone, because they don't ever call to say that your kid is having a fun day. It's always a health or behavioral issue. On that day, it was the daycare director, calling to say that Natalie had fallen backwards while running on a tile floor, hit the back of her head and had lost consciousness. My stomach dropped. Since Nat was a bit dazed and groggy they had called EMS and could I get there as soon as possible? Um... suffice it to say that I was there in a flash, and had about 20 heart attacks during that 5 minute drive. Meanwhile Todd was tearing through the commute that normally takes him 40 minutes in record time.
When I arrived at daycare and saw my baby surrounded by EMS professionals I immediately burst into tears. Natalie came to me for a snuggle, and I learned that she did not seem to be displaying any signs of a concussion. They still wanted me to take her to the ER just in case, so we went straight there. Todd arrived shortly after we did, and luckily it was a slow morning and we got right in. Since Natalie seemed to be getting back to her normal self, they decided to observe her for an hour and a half rather than doing an MRI or CT scan immediately. We were thankful that she wasn't showing any serious side effects, and that the physician was cautious about exposing her to that much radiation without a clear reason to do so. Thankfully after her observation period was up, she was acting totally like herself again and they discharged us. Huge relief!!!!
How do you keep a 2-year-old entertained in the ER? Why, surgical gloves, of course!
