Christmas with the Fowles

Around lunchtime on Christmas day we headed over to Dan and Nancy's house to celebrate with them.  Basil and Florence had arrived the day before, and Erin and Stuart drove over from Detroit after spending the morning with Erin's family.  Due to his work schedule, Jordan was not able to make it to Kalamazoo for Christmas.  He is planning to come home sometime this winter, but again, it was strange to have one of the key family members celebrating from afar.  We had a lovely, relaxing afternoon and evening of present-opening, laughter, and of course delicious food.

Christmas at Home

As much as I truly love being able to celebrate Christmas with both sides of our extended family, I love that we have some traditions set aside just for our little family of four-soon-to-be-five.  After dinner on Christmas Eve we drove around looking at the Christmas lights.  Then we came home, changed into pjs and watched "How The Grinch Stole Christmas."  After that it was time to put out milk and cookies for Santa and carrots on the deck for Rudolph and the other reindeer!  The kids were excited, but tired enough that they fell asleep pretty quickly.

Nathan and Natalie are sharing a room now (more on that in a different post) and during the transition we moved the baby monitor into that room.  An added bonus of this is that we got to hear the two of them whispering to each other on Christmas morning, wondering whether or not Santa had been here.  They very quietly (who knew it was possible for them to be so quiet!) snuck out of their room and soon the living room was full of excited whispers that Santa DID come!!!  We waited a little bit, and then went out to find them curled up together under a blanket on the couch keeping an eye on the pile of presents under the tree. SO cute!

Christmas with the Emhofs

The weekend before Christmas day we went up to Grand Rapids to celebrate with Mom and Dad.  Unfortunately Steve, Joanna, and Henry were unable to join us this year.  It always feels strange to celebrate a holiday without my brother there. But I am sure they were happy not to have to deal with cross-country travel for the first time in many years!

It is becoming an annual Christmas tradition for us to head to Meijer Gardens to see the reindeer, the beautiful Christmas tree display and of course the elaborate miniature train set!  Unfortunately this year the trains were only running for a short portion of the time we were there--who knew that miniatures could suffer from mechanical issues just like real trains?!?  There was still plenty to see, and we all had a great time.
