Watching Thomas

This weekend, Nathan discovered that Thomas the Train, in addition to being an awesome toy, has his own tv show! As soon as he realized who was on tv, he had to go and get his Thomas toy, and hold it the entire time. What a cutie!

Celebrating 33

I had a lovely series of birthday celebrations this year, starting with an early celebration with all of my girls in Kentucky. On my actual birthday I had the day off of work, and I had a wonderfully lowkey day hanging out with Nathan. Todd brought home a cake for dessert which all three of us loved.

Making a wish!

Birthday girl. :)

My sweet boy, waiting for his cake.

Last weekend Mom and Dad came down to Kalamazoo, and Dad cooked the absolutely delicious Engagement Chicken. It's a recipe from the Barefoot Contessa (find it here), and lore has it that several women made this dish for their boyfriends and were all engaged within a few months--talk about an irresistible meal!

Nathan and Grandma Gail are great friends and playmates. N decided that his entire fleet needed to be moved from the playroom into the living room.

Isn't she a thing of beauty???

Tired enough to lay down, but not tired enough to stop playing!

I'm super excited about the Amy Butler bath towels that Mom and Dad got me! Aren't they pretty?

Weekend with Daddy

Whenever I am traveling without my boys, one of the highlights of my travels are the photos that Todd sends me of my little dude. It makes me feel a little more connected to home, and always makes me smile.

I thought I'd share the photos that Todd sent me while I was in Kentucky:

"It's NOT cold outside!"

Nathan's sense of humor is really developing. One of his favorite ways to be funny is to label something completely incorrectly--hilarious! One of the ways this has manifested itself is that he and Todd love to have "arguments" about whether or not it is cold outside. They alternate positions on the issue--as soon as Todd agrees with Nathan, N switches sides and argues the opposite. It is so funny, and great practice in opposites! While I was out of town, Todd was able to capture this ritual on video.

Lynn's Paradise Cafe

On Saturday evening we decided to leave our compound and have dinner in Louisville at Lynn's Paradise Cafe. It is a fun, quirky atmosphere with some classic Louisville dishes and servers who are a little surly, but get your food out quickly. Most importantly, we didn't have to cook or clean! :)

Girls' weekend in Kentucky

About 13 months ago, my group of girlfriends from the class of 2000, inspired by the upcoming tenth anniversary of our college graduation, decided to actually get serious and plan the weekend girls' retreat that we've been talking about for so many years. After many email exchanges, it turned out that the first weekend that worked for all of us was MLK weekend 2011, more than a year away!! But at least it was on everyone's calendar. :) And, miraculously, 10 of the 11 of us were able to be there (Stephanie had the very understandable reason of brand new baby Henry that kept her at home).

We all gathered at Edgewater Resort on Taylorsville Lake in Kentucky. It is a series of freestanding condos nestled into Taylorsville State Park, 30 minutes outside of Louisville and conveniently located in Bourbon Country. It also happens to be located almost exactly in the geographic center of all our homes, and Gillian's parents own a condo there--perfect! Even though we only did detailed planning with those we were sharing vehicles with, everyone arrived within an hour of each other on Friday evening!

We spent most of the weekend hanging out at the cottage--talking, laughing, eating, hot tubbing, walking, going to the on-site spa, laughing, and talking some more. It was absolutely wonderful! With this group of women, I feel like there is no topic of conversation that is taboo, and regardless of the various levels of regular communication that we keep with each other, when we get together we're all immediately comfortable. When I think about my job as an admission counselor, it is really to help high school seniors find a college where they can discover lifelong friends such as these. I am so very blessed.

Appetizers and wine to start off the weekend.
